CHECKING THE FLOE OF ICE: REAL-TIME PROCESSING OF DIGITAL IMAGE DATA

The Ice Centre Environment Canada, in Ottawa, is the government agency responsible for monitoring sea ice in Canadian navigable waters. Remotely sensed information has been a major data input, with satellite and airborne data analyzed and integrated in hard copy format. A project was initiated to develop a computer-based system that would enable analysts to process, display and integrate geocoded digital imagery and superimposed chart graphics. The resultant system, called IDIAS (Ice Data Integration and Analysis System), is described. IDIAS will allow the daily charting of ice conditions across the Canadian Arctic and east coasts directly from digital imagery from aircraft and satellites.
