Hong Kong has overtaken Rotterdam as the busiest container port in the world. Kaohsiung is not far behind Rotterdam for second place, and Singapore has edged out New York/New Jersey for the fourth spot. The ways in which Hong Kong, Kaohsiung and Singapore will be competing through the early 1990s are examined, with particular attention to the features and facilities that set each of these ports in the dynamic southeast Asian region apart from its competitors.
