TREATMENT OF HEAVY FUELS FOR SHIPBOARD POWER PLANTS

The authors feel that the preparation of heavy fuel grades has not received enough attention and that some data from ship owners are contradictory. To identify the unique features of heavy fuel processing in power plant fuel systems, they performed special studies on ships in service to determine the contamination parameters of standard heavy fuels: M40 furnace fuel oil, +10 export fuel oil, and DT motor fuel. Samples were taken from the power plant fuel systems of various ships before cleaning. The levels of contaminant distribution and the dispersed composition of mechanical impurity particles were established through chemical analysis and microphotography. Based on the conclusions drawn, recommendations for heavy fuel treatment are offered.
