The structure and use of deep sea nodule-mining vessels employing a pipe mineral-lifting system is described and analyzed. The basic components of the system are a collector and lift pipe. The latter is structurally connected to the ship and the collector, and the collector is either towed or self-powered. Four ships in particular are discussed, all U.S. vessels: DEEPSEA MINER I, DEEPSEA MINER II, SEDKO 445 and GLOMAR EXPLORER.
