This article deals with the maintenance dredging of the entrance channels to the locks of the Port of Antwerp and the research undertaken to optimize low budget dredging methods for these entrance channels. The research required some knowledge of the sedimentation process in the entrance channels and of the properties of Scheldt estuary mud. The results of sedimentation studies are discussed in some detail. A description is given of the maintenance dredging of the right river bank entrance channels and of the various types of ploughs used. In a case study, the dredging of the Kallo Lock is also described. Lastly, model experiments undertaken by Belgium's State Hydraulic Laboratory at Borgerhout are outlined.
