To ensure a high level of stability, the SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique, uses 350 tons of aluminum alloys in its upperworks. In the early 1960s, such lightweight alloy superstructures were riveted and bolted to the hull. Today, "transition joints" made from sandwich materials are used instead. They are produced by explosion bonding or by combined extrusion and are positioned so that the alloy surface can be welded to the aluminum alloy structure and the steel surface to the steel structure of the ship. A diagram illustrating their use accompanies the text.
