ANALYSIS OF SHIPPING WATER WITH THE EXPERIMENTS AND THE NUMERICAL CALCULATIONS

The depth of water at forty points on a deck and the impact pressure upon a water breaker were measured for a model of an S-175 containership in regular head waves. A numerical simulation of shipping water in the time domain was then carried out by the Method of Characteristics to recognize the complex phenomena. An expanded deck was introduced to simulate the wave spreading from the deck. Simplified conditions were selected for the numerical simulation. For wave heights and impact pressures, the results of the numerical simulation agreed well with measured results. It was determined that for higher wave heights, the water on deck was concentrated along the center line and crashed against the water breaker. For lower wave heights, the water was also concentrated along the center line but spread in every direction.
