This paper begins by discussing the economic and technical reasons behind the increasing use of shaft generators. It goes on to describe the different types of shaft-driven generators that are available and different applications and mechanical arrangments for vessels with fixed or controllable pitch propellers. Succeeding sections deal with the principles and functions of shaft generators, with various aspects of their design, and with their integration into ship operation. The presentation concludes with a discussion of new developments in the field, the most promising of which owe to the advent of the Gate Turn-Off Thyristor (GTO Thyristors).
