INTELLIGENT COMPUTER AID IN MARINE DESIGN AND OCEAN ENGINEERING

The development of knowledge-based expert systems has become a major research activity within the field of computer aided engineering. Two of the most challenging areas of application are planning and design, two complementary areas that do not conform to stringent or well-formulated methods of approach. In contrast to passive tools, an intelligent system for these areas of design or planning can act as an assistant, taking independent initiatives to reach a solution. Two prototype expert systems of this type are described. The first is LIFT, a knowledge based plan proposer for heavy lift operations. The second is SEAMAID, a knowledge-based system for the conceptual design of offshore loading systems.
