AN INTEGRATED RIG MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR A SEMISUBMERSIBLE FLOATING PRODUCTION VESSEL

This paper describes an integrated rig management system that has been installed on a floating production vessel operating in the North Sea. This system is unusual in that it integrates into a single system the monitoring and control of all major on-board vessel systems--namely, ballast, propulsion, mooring, electrical generation, and oil production. The paper describes the system architecture, which combines a distributed digital-control system developed for shore-based production control with a general-purpose minicomputer for supervisory control. This architecture provides the advantages of design flexibility, improved operability, operator- station interchangeability, reduced wiring costs, and reduced maintenance costs.
