Current requirements dealing with shaft loading and the distance between shaft bearings offer limits on permissible values but no clear recommendations for optimizing the arrangement of shaft bearings. This arrangement is vital in that it determines the stress-deformed state of the shaft, bearing loadings, and shaftline serviceability. A method for determining the optimal arrangement is presented.
