THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT COMMUNICATIONS AND NAVIGATION IN THE NORTH

The northern waters of Canada are a frontier that still presents a challenge for the marine industry, but electronic technology is helping to meet the problems. The main civil communications and navigation systems available to Arctic shipping in this vast territory so lacking in supporting infrastructure are described. These systems are generally an extension of the infrastructure in southern waters and conform to international conventions. Several important applications are noted of electronic technology in which the Canadian Coast Guard is interested, applications aimed at improving the effectiveness of Arctic operations.
