Following the declaration of a 200-mile economic zone by the Canadian government in 1977, fish stocks have been rebuilt to the point where their abundance and quality are unrivaled. This article is about the Canadian fleet of deepsea fishing vessels that has been developed to harvest these stocks, describing the design, personnel, and operations of the vessels. Because they must often navigate in proximity to ice in order to reach their fishing grounds, the vessels reflect the results of a major ice-strengthening program.
