MACHINE INTELLIGENCE AND THE UNDERWATER VEHICLE

Underwater vehicles, most commonly remotely operated vehicles (ROV), have proved their effectiveness in such roles as diver support, inspection, pipe and cable laying, drilling and construction support, and surveying. In the future, efforts will not only be channeled into making these operations cheaper and less dependent on using men underwater, but also into the development of new capabilities in support of deep water operations. To achieve these aims, a number of technological developments are needed to increase task automation, improve operability and allow umbilical-free deployment. A number of these developments can benefit significantly from the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. This paper reviews the issues involved, shows how AI can help and considers how far AI has progressed toward meeting the needs for short and long term applications.
