GRINDING PROPELLERS DURING SHIP REPAIR

The authors begin by noting the effect of propeller surface roughness upon a ship's propulsive performance. The mechanism by which roughness develops is then explained. Propeller efficiency can be maintained by regular high-quality blade grinding to keep the propeller in near new condition. This is a labor-intensive and expensive process. To control its cost and maximize its benefits, various recommendations are offered that make the grinding process as efficient and effective as possible.
