The evolution of computer programs for the management and control of information in marine terminal operations is outlined. Examples of specific applications of computer programs to terminal operations are cited, and the benefits of installing a computer system are summarized. Several problems that arise when computerization is contemplated are addressed: deciding when to computerize; determining the appropriate level of computer program sophistication for a particular marine terminal; and deciding whether to buy a ready-made program or create one's own.
