A COUNTER-ROTATING PROPELLER-THRUSTER SYSTEM

High fuel prices have spurred efforts to improve the efficiency of ship propulsion machinery. This article discusses one means of contributing toward this goal: the use of a pair of equally loaded coaxial contrarotating (CR) propellers. In addition, by substituting an azimuthing thruster for the conventional rudder and steering gear, maneuvering performance at low and zero ship speed is considerably improved. The results of full scale and model tests are discussed and fuel savings quantified.
