DEVELOPMENT OF A CRITERION FOR EVALUATING THE ACCEPTABILITY OF HULL EXCITATION FORCES

This report is directed primarily toward a determination of whatever level of propeller excitation is acceptable in the preliminary design of a ship. This study seeks to evaluate whether the resultant excitation force so calculated is acceptable for a hull that has reasonable structural response indications and also to determine how hull characteristics influence its response to propeller excitation. The method used in this study idealizes the ship as a series of Timoshenko beams carrying concentrated and sprung masses and rotary inertias at their junctions. To analyze this model, a computer program was develped and predictions were compared against measurments on several different ships.
