THE DEVELOPMENT OF A VOYAGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR FUEL-EFFICIENT CROSSINGS

This paper describes the design and testing of a new and complete voyage management system intended for use aboard ferries and cruise ships to reduce fuel consumption. The most efficient way of crossing is calculated with an onboard personal computer using all relevant ship, propeller and engine data. The route of the ship is not optimized, but the speed along the selected route is. The influence of water depth, wind, waves and tidal currents is taken into account. Direct measurements are taken and compared with the predictions. If necessary, adjustments are made during the trip. The measurements are stored and can be used for further analysis after completion of the voyage.
