DESIGN AND SELECTION OF PROPULSORS FOR HIGH SPEED CRAFT
Interest in megayachts and the quest for high speed are resulting in various combinations of gas turbines, high-performance lightweight diesels, waterjets, surface propellers, supercavitating propellers and controllable pitch propellers. This paper focuses on the selection of suitable propulsors and on the technical issues that bear upon the decision making process. Emphasis is placed upon defining the factors that determine the needed size of the thrusting system, taking into account both hull drag and engine characteristics. The discussion includes submerged and surface propeller propulsors, as well as water jets.
