SHIPPING INDUSTRY MARINE DEBRIS EDUCATION PLAN

This document is a comprehensive marine debris education plan for the shipping industry serving the United States--the foreign and commercial shipping industry, the cruise industry, and ports and terminal operators. The purpose of the Plan is to to ensure that commercial shippers, cruise lines, and ports and terminal operators are aware of the provisions of MARPOL Annex V, and to encourage voluntary compliance with those provisions. It was developed to help avoid the disruption of shipping schedules that could occur if U.S. prosecution of at-sea garbage disposal violators is necessary; and to be part of the solution to the problems of marine debris and entanglement.
