RESTRICTED WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT, PHASE 3B: FINAL REPORT AND DRAFT

Phase IIIB of the Restricted Waterways Experiment was designed to investigate a pilot's ability to navigate an 80,000 dwt tanker inbound from the sea through a channel 500 ft in width and approximately 5 nautical miles in length. Plans for a series of experimental scenarios to be carried out for this purpose on the Computer Aided Research Facility's (CAORF) ship simulator are reviewed. This final report then presents plans for analyzing the data obtained by CAORF. Recommended analyses include: a subjective evaluation of pilot performance; an analysis of ship dynamics in channel legs and turns, and an analysis of pilot behavior and issuance of control orders.
