This document provides a detailed functional and technical description for the Maritime Digital Selective Calling System (SELCALL) that is being developed to improve the capability for timely, reliable communication at sea. The SELCALL unit utilizes a digital message audio frequency shift keying with error checks and time diversity in conjunction with conventional marine radio communications equipment to achieve this goal. The authors point out that SELCALL is a prime candidate for use in the development of automated radiotelephones, vessel traffic management systems, and other advanced marine communications applications.
