PRELIMINARY DESIGN STUDY OF INTRAISLAND TRANSPORT VESSELS FOR THE HA'APAI GROUP OF ISLANDS IN THE KINGDOM OF TONGA

A regional development workshop conducted in March 1981 for the Ha'apai group of islands in the Kingdom of Tonga identified the problem of providing safe, reliable and regular shipping connections within the island group. This paper discusses the following aspects of a shipping system to address the problem: the determination of the existing patterns of demand and an assessment of the potential for expansion; the development of specifications for vessels to serve these routes; the conceptual design of the vessels; the prediction of operating costs; the assessment of the effect of variable inputs to economic analysis, with particular reference to fuel costs; and the identification of areas for futher study.
