The aim of this paper is to provide a background and context for the papers presented at the 1985 Regional Conference on Sail-Motor Propulsion, the subject of which was wind-assisted propulsion for commercial ships, with particular emphasis on how it affects countries of the Asian Development Bank's region. It first gives a background to wind propulsion and a description of wind propulsion devices, including sail rigs, rigid airfoil rigs, mechanical high lift airfoils, kites and wind turbines. It then discusses the performance of wind propulsion devices and various other factors involved with wind propulsion devices, such as cargo manning, reliability and maintenance, ship motion improvement, air draft, and others. Finally, it discusses the method for selecting a wind propulsion device.
