This ice/hull friction coefficient study included both a literature review and a model test program. The literature review covered such topics as measurement of hull surface roughness; the methodology of hull surface representation and simulation; and the influence of ice/hull interactions on the friction coefficient. The model test program consisted of a series of friction tests of ice samples against reproductions of model surfaces, and level ice resistance model tests for three friction coefficients on the parallel midbody and bow of the MV ARCTIC. Results of the model tests are presented and analyzed.
