PROBLEMS AND TECHNIQUES IN THE USE OF AUDIO FREQUENCY TRACK CIRCUITS

The electronic, or audio frequency, track circuit is growing in popularity because insulated joints are elminated and two or more track circuits may be overlapped without repeating relays. In the use of audio frequency track circuit equipment there are the following problems: Rail impedance, ballast resistance variation, interfering signals, lightning damage, and complex test procedures. After discussing these, and suggesting solutions for each, the author concludes with the observation that to solve audio frequency track circuit problems, railroads and suppliers must have the "ability to think 'AC'."
