MEASUREMENT OF ICE FORCES ON SMALL VESSELS

Volume 1 of this report discusses the second phase of a project to investigate ice loads on small vessels in light ice conditions. The fishing trawler CAPE BRIER had been previously fitted with an array of strain gages to measure ice loads over 3.8 sq m of the starboard bow. The present phase of the project included the placement of twelve additional strain gages, and further finite element modeling and physical calibrations. Improved data collection hardware and software were designed and installed. Measurements that were obtained during operations off the Newfoundland Coast are tabulated in a series of appendices in Volume 2 of the report.
