THE ADEQUACY OF UNITED STATES SHIPYARDS FOR MOBILIZATION

The author assesses the adequacy of U.S. shipyards for mobilization in the light of the three criteria: (1) the adequacy of the number of shipyards; (2) availability of a sufficient work force; and (3) availability of materials, especially shipbuilding steel. He indicates that there is a lack of information available--at the unclassified level--to draw a valid conclusion as to the mobilization capability of U.S. shipyards. Recommendations for future actions to improve our ability to provide an ongoing analysis of the status of our shipyard capabilities are presented.
