ETHICS AND FASHION IN DESIGN
The author considers the ethical stances available to a designer and, in particular, to a maritime designer. Historical perspective provides some insight into the conflicting pressures upon the establishment of standards and the increasing speed at which change is engendered. Influences of the law, pressure groups, the media and politics are considered. The responsibilities of learned societies, companies and the individual are examined in relation to the adoption of standards and the morality of design for profit or war.
