The results of the dynamic loading of a cantilever by magneto-motive loading, explosive loading and by high bullet speed impact are compared with the predictions of simple theory which assumes that the load is impulsive. Comparison of the deformed shape of cantilevers tested during the investigation and the shape predicted by theory, in conjunction with the use of high-speed photography, shows that the theory embodies the correct mode of deformation but underestimates magnitudes of deflection. Magneto-motive loading proves to be an excellent method of loading for experimental work as it results in little local deformation at the point of loading; ability to ascertain the impulse delivered does, however, detract from its value. /Author/TRRL/
