THE USE OF LIQUID SOLUTIONS IN WINTER MAINTENANCE ON THE STATE ROADS OF PIEDMONT AND THE AOSTA VALLEY
SISTEMI DI INTERVENTO CON SOLUZIONI LIQUIDE NELLA MANUTENZIONE INVERNALE DELLE STRADE STATALI DEL PIEMONTE E DELLE VALLE D'AOSTA
In the Piedmond and Valle d'Aosta region near Turin, 400 km of state roads are at a height of 600 M, and a further 300 km of road are at a height of more than 1000 M above sea level. Where traffic exceeds 10000 vehicles a day on these roads, the use of salt-sand mixtures has been found inadequate during winter. Sodium chloride and calcium chloride in granulated form are also useless since the particles are too easily dispersed by traffic, and they are difficult to spread, especially on compacted snow and ice. This article describes the use of liquid calcium chloride as a preventive and curative measure in winter maintenance: as a preventive treatment against the permanence of snow and the formation of ice on the pavement, and as a curative treatment to dissolve compacted snow and ice, resulting from the passage of traffic and the use of snow-cleaning machines. /TRRL/
