THE DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS (6). CRITICAL ASPECTS OF THE APPLICATION OF A PRACTICAL METHOD OF PAVEMENT DESIGN. THE 3RD LANE OF THE MILAN-BOLOGNA MOTORWAY

DIMENSIONAMENTO DI SOVRASTRUTTURE FLESSIBILI (6). ASPETTI CRITICI DELL'APPLICAZIONE DI UN METODO RAZIONALE DI CALCOLO DI SOVRASTRUTTURE. LA III CORSIA DELLA MILANO-BOLOGNA

The study reported was carried out to develop a design approach which would avoid the automatic assumption of average mechanical characteristics of the pavement layers, and of average coefficients of equivalence resulting from the homogeneity of traffic. An attempt was also made to avoid reference to material fatigue curves not really connected to the type of mixture used. The design approach described is based mainly on the use of the law of accumulated fatigue damage (Miner's Law), and an attempt is made to prove this law from a study of the performance of the Milan-Bologna Motorway, as a basis for the design of its third lane.
