THE DESIGN SPEED ON CURVES

DE ONTWERPSNELHEID IN BOGEN

The design speed, being an important basic criterion for the continuity of the highway, determines to a large extent the appropriate minimum curve radius. The basic principle for this design speed (which is particularly determined by the function of the road network, economic aspects and the driver behaviour) is taken as 85% of future speed. A detailed description is given of those factors which play A role as far as safe speed on a curve is concerned, particularly the chosen values for the sideway friction factors. Based upon those values the minimum curve radius as a function of the design speed is found. /TRRL/
