The author discusses the proposed increases in the maximum weights and sizes of goods vehicles submitted to the Ministry of Transport by the road transport industry. The discussion centres on the effects of the proposed increases on congestion, pavement design and maintenance, vibration of buildings near roads carrying these vehicles, safety, accident rates, overnight parking for lorries and air pollution by fumes and noise. The question is raised of possible greater utilization of railways and canals for the conveyance of heavy freight. /TRRL/
