ALTERNATE FORMS OF POWER SYSTEMS FOR FUTURE MOTOR VEHICLES

ALTERNATIVA DRIVKRAFTSYSTEM FOER VAARA FRAMTIDA BILAR

The question of alternative forms of power systems for motor vehicles has assumed great importance as a result of last autumn's energy crisis. Experiments are being made on extracting oil from Swedish peat deposits, and work is also in progress on a fuel cell system. A good review of international research in this field at present is given in "alternative power units" published by Swedish BP. This gives a brief description of the principal advantages and drawbacks, fuel economy and lubrication requirements of the following types of power unit: 1. The wankel engine, 2. The multi-fuel IC engine, 3. The sterling engine, 4. The gas turbine, 5. The Rankine engine, 6. The diesel engine, 7. Battery operation, 8. Fuel cells, 9. The hybrid engine. /TRRL/
