CORROSIVITY OF RECIRCULATING CAR WASH WATER

Samples of wash water from automatic car washes using a recirculating wash water system were taken on a monthly basis over a winter season in two Canadian cities, and on one occasion in Massachusetts. The chloride concentration of the wash water may at times be sufficient to result in significant acceleration of corrosion. Proprietary inhibitors are available for this type of service. To avoid potential corrosion problems associated with contamination of wash water with salt from automobiles, automatic car washes with recirculating systems could be converted to once-through systems.
