THE INFLUENCE OF ROAD EDUCATION FILMS. WORK CARRIED OUT AS A GERMAN TRAFFIC SAFETY COUNCIL RESEARCH PROJECT

DER EINFLUSS VON FILMEN ZUR VERKEHRSERZIEHUNG. DURCHGEFUEHRTALS FORSCHUNGSAUFTRAG DES DEUTSCHEN VERKENHRSSICHERHEITSRATS EV

The question is raised as to whether films are a suitable means of influencing behaviour and attitudes, and the effect of the various styles of road safety film is considered. The research consisted of asking cinemagoers who saw fairly old or more recent safety films as the supporting programme for their impressions of the films. Only drivers were questioned. It was shown that in general the films only had a minimum effect on the attitudes of the road users. This does not imply that it is basically impossible to change drivers' behavior and attitudes by means of short films. However the various styles of the films - too little pertinent or concrete information, incorrect settings etc. - do not seem suitable for achieving adequate audience identification and motivation. /TRRL/
