SAFETY PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH DISABLED PERSONS ON THE ROADS
SICHERHEITSPROBLEME DER KOERPERBEHINDTEN IM STRASSENVERKEHR
The author reports on the first German/Austrian/Swiss Accident Conference in 1972, at which the themes were the problems associated with disabled persons on the roads. On the one hand reference was made to the technical means available enabling persons minus two arms or two legs to drive a car, but the need was stressed for legislation to protect the disabled person himself and the general public. Whereas for example less importance was attached to acuity of hearing, stress was laid on the danger associated with those suffering from heart and circulation diseases. The problems of the epileptic, the neurotic and other psychically affected persons were also dealt with, as were orthopedic illnesses. During the discussion it became apparent that the design of seat belts is often too narrow. It was concluded that doctors can do little if only because of inadequate traffic regulations and incorrect planning roads are built which actually promote accidents. /TRRL/
