This article is concerned with the problems of visco-elastic tunnel analysis and describes how solutions can be simply obtained by means of linear elastic analyses. The author presents formulae that may be used for a number of situations, but points out that they have been derived by assuming conditions of plane strain. He uses the Kelvin model relating uni-axial stress-strain and time to derive equations applying to unlined and lined tunnels respectively. Particular cases dealt with in detail are where a thick lining is respectively subjected to a uniform radial load and a distortional load. In the latter case details are given of full shear interaction, limited shear action at the lining/ground interface and for a flexible lining. The article concludes by describing the estimation of the effect of adjacent tunnels, and illustrates it with an example. /TRRL/
