EXPERT SYSTEM ADVISERS FOR INCIDENT MANAGEMENT AT SEA

Three prototypes of expert systems for the management of incidents at sea were constructed for use by the Royal Navy of the UK. The first offered advice on dealing with bomb alert problems and the second dealt with flooding and stability. The third demonstrated what can be achieved with a really good man-machine interface and full graphics capability. They were favorably received by all ship officers and judged valuable as advisory systems that could work in parallel with human beings to guard against costly mistakes and oversights by presenting relevant facts and analyzing priorities and options. Such expert systems were also perceived to have a potential role in on-the-job training.
