PROPELLER EROSION AND PROTECTION METHODS USED IN FERRY TERMINALS IN THE PORT OF STOCKHOLM
The ferry service between Stockholm and Finland is operated with six of the largest car/passenger ferries in the world. The propeller jets generated by the powerful machinery of these ferries necessitate effective erosion protection. Hydraulic model studies have been performed where the jet velocities behind ships with one and two propellers, respectively, have been measured. The results are presented in diagrams that serve as a basis for the design of erosion protection. Such protection as that afforded by of gabions and heavy precast concrete slabs is described.
