WAVE FORMATION ABOUT A SHIP BOW ADVANCING IN HEAD SEAS
The diffraction of regular waves by an advancing ship bow were studied experimentally and numerically. Diffracted wave patterns were photographically visualized and wave formation was analyzed by the grid projection method. Significant nonlinearities in diffraction were found, particularly in the occurrence of circular detached or oblique attached stationary waves, depending upon the Froude number. This nonlinear wave formation about the bow was numerically simulated using a finite difference method based on Navier-Stokes equations. Computations agreed well with measurements.
