THE EFFECT OF WORKING TEMPERATURE ON THE PROPERTIES OF ROAD BITUMEN

An essential factor for the working (mixing, storing, transporting, laying, compaction) of bituminous mixtures is the viscosity of the binder. As the viscosity depends upon the bitumen production process and origin, as well as on temperature, it is suggested that in future the absolute viscosity in cst be used to classify the binder. From this the required working temperature can be deduced. Details are given of the changes of the properties of the binder under the influence of high temperatures in relation to time and flow of air. Research into mixture samples disclosed that optimal compaction is only possible up to a specified temperature. When this temperature is exceeded the density and stability decrease. The storage of bituminous mixtures has a prejudicial effect on density and stability. The investigations confirm the working temperatures given in the current standards. /TRRL/
