INFLUENCE OF ANHYDROUS RUBBER - PREMIX SYSTEMS ON THE TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN

DER EINFLUSS WASSERFREIER KAUTSCHUK-PREMIX-SYSTEME AUF DIE TECHNOLOGISCHEN EIGENSCHAFTEN VON BITUMEN

When bitumen is modified by rubber, the formation of a new colloid system is assumed; this is caused by the fact that during the boiling process the malthenes present in the bitumen cause the particles of rubber to swell and be distributed uniformly through the bitumen. This process provides the bitumen with a number of properties which improve it. The effect of the modification is more noticeable with crude rather than vulcanized rubber. The interaction of the malthenes and rubber causes the bitumen to lose a considerable proportion of its malthenes. This loss is prevented by a recently developed rubber-premix- system. The system contains the rubber in a swollen condition so that only very small amounts of bitumen are needed to bring about the swelling. Tests indicate an extension of the plastic area through a lowering of the breaking point given the same softening point, i.e. reduced sensitivity to cold. Further tests are being carried out on the alteration of the mechanical and rheological properties, on sensitivity to thermal and mechanical decomposition, and on ageing strength. /TRRL/
