TUNNEL IN THE COURSE OF THE KIEL URBAN MOTORWAY

TUNNEL IM ZUGE DER STADTAUTOBAHN KIEL

Because of the building of a second high bridge over the Kiel Canal the B 503 had to be moved or extended bearing in mind the town-plan of Kiel and the need to avoid excessive noise in built-up areas it was decided to build a road tunnel of two 251 metres long two-laned tubes. The construction and building including the ventilation problems arising during construction, visual difficulties when laying the gussasphalt and the insertion of ventilators for temperature control during asphalting are described. For the completed tunnel it was decided to do away with artificial ventilation, but blow and discharge tubes were provided. Measures taken to reduce traffic noise by noise suppression, lighting, control by TV cameras, telephones, traffic light systems, escape doors, operational buildings and fire precautions are briefly mentioned. /TRRL/
