APPLICATIONS OF ACOUSTIC EMISSION TECHNOLOGY

The use of acoustic emission techniques by industries using pressure vessels and related equipment can increase economy by predicting failures due to stress corrosion so that the problem may be corrected before it becomes catastrophic and by extending time periods between shutdowns. The article describes continuous monitoring techniques and filtering systems and suggests areas where the existing systems can be put to work or where a modified system could be used. The author concludes by stating that acoustic emission is a valuable addition to non-destructive testing techniques and that it will continue to provide maximum protection at lowest cost both to simple and complex pressure vessel and pipeline systems.
