This article reviews the progress being made in the use of sodium vapor lamps in Great Britain. The 100w SOX lamp with a 6000 hour average rated life and increased lumen values has given Britain public lighting engineers an efficient and economic lighting source. It is pointed out that by using the 200w rating (30,000 lumens) the number of columns can be drastically reduced, thereby both improving the aesthetic appearance and reducing the accident hazard. Brief mention is made of improvements in other lighting sources, such as color corrected mercury fluorescent lamps (MBF/U) and long life Blended lamps (MBTL).
