THE PERCEPTION OF THE LEAD CAR DURING NIGHT DRIVING

DE PERCEPTIE VAN DE VOORLIGGER BIJ HET NACHTRIJDEN

The article reports on experimental research conducted into human perceptual capacities when following a lead car in the dark and specifically with respect to perceptual ability in detecting movement of the lead vehicle relative to ones own vehicle. In three experiments it was established that the relative movement of the lead car is detected from the change of the angular distance between its tail lights accompanying a change in viewing distance. Further calculations demonstrated that the perceptual performances of motorists following a car in the dark are rather inadequate, as a result of which critical situations may occur. /TRRL/
