PLANNING THE ROUTE SYSTEM FOR URBAN BUSES

The route system is planned to optimize bus passenger convenience, expressed in terms of travel time and bus crowding, within fixed cost constraints, which implies a fixed number of available buses. The service area is divided into zones. The number of journeys to be made between each pair of zones is input data. Desirable routes are generated and added to an initial set of routes; and undesirable routes are identified for possible deletion. Optimal frequencies for a given set of routes and a fixed number of available buses are determined by a gradient method. The minimum of total journey time plus discomfort penalties, generated in phase two, indicates the value of the generated set of routes in phase one.
